After having followed the guide and installed and configured the gnome3 package I experience a black screen completing the boot sequence (the Nvidia logo shows briefly just before turning black). I can exit (ctrl+alt+F2) to the shell and login, but still cannot start the gnome-session. Usually a black screen with gnome-session means that the gnome-session actually failed, but SGD can not detect it (some gnome processes might still be running). I recommend trying to run a gnome-session via ssh -x outside of SGD, or look at the launch window and possible errors displayed. 2. I'd recommend also gnome-user-guide and gnome-control-center. gnome-shell and other packages you installed all only have gnome-session as a recommended or suggested package, which aren't installed by default. Hence you need to at least explicitly install that. I am using Fedora 27 and having the same issue "Black Screen". I tried a lot of 'workaround', none of them works for me. then I switched to use MATE desktop environment, and got it working in seconds. if you had struggled with the issue for a long time, i would suggest to try MATE desktop. if you switch to icewm, you can at least get a screen. GNOME seems to not work at all in an xrdp session. just edit /etc/xrdp/startwm.sh and prepend the list of Sessions with "icewm". but note that some applications (gnome-terminal) are still broken. I'm a bit surprised that a package like xrdp made it into SLES in such a broken state. When I boot up the machine it boots up to a blank screen. So all you need is to connect tit through a VNC session but it seems that you're trying to restart another X session. Re: X Application starts to a black screen I have tried to get gnome 3.2 to work properly for at couple of hours now.. I get a black screen with a cursor, when i should get the login screen. Description of problem:When trying to connect to remote windows servers after being prompted for credentials, the session opens up but only get a black screen. It works when using Remmina app. but not with included Remote Desktop viewer. It worked before.
